all right
okay if you guys can hear this please
reply versus remind or go ahead and
click on and text me at four eight oh three eight five eight four nine seven
all right you can see the sign behind me okay awesome
all right good we’re getting some good feedback here that you guys can hear me and stuff all right excellent
so here’s what some here’s what’s coming up on Tuesday April 14th at 6 p.m. is
the marketing class please plan on attending that class will be at 6 p.m.
and the week after that is the virtual college fair since the regular college
fair got postponed cancelled because of all the saccharine a craziness there
they’re doing a you virtual college fair and the website is strive scan comm
slash of virtual please sign up for that and then they’ll send you out some
notifications about which colleges are doing live streaming virtual stuff and all that okay so plan on attending the
virtual college fair prior to the college the virtual college fair is the
marketing class and it’s strategically that day before the fair because I’m
going to talk about the things you need to do the things that you need to look for how to follow up and how to develop
rapport and a relationship with the recruiter because it will be the
recruiter and a panel of people that make the decision do we admit you and do
we give you scholarships and if they know you and they like you the probability of those scholarships goes
up okay so plan on attending both of those events I don’t know if I
have chat turned on if let’s see if I
can figure out how to do this yeah it’s
not it’s not function right now anyway if you do have questions send me a text
or send me a remind and I’ll be happy to answer those questions okay so without further ado let us start a
resume class so hope everybody is doing
ok out there and here we go so this is
like a College resume class that the purpose of this class is to instruct you
with the difference between a regular resume and a College resume and what this high-school resume is going to do
for you as you apply to colleges so
first we’re going to talk about the why admissions to some colleges is highly
selective I’ll send out the website for
the virtual college fair after the presentation somebody texted back okay
so the admissions to highly selective colleges is extremely competitive so
let’s look at some numbers last year Stanford had a four percent admission
ratio Harvard five percent a UCLA went
down a little bit to 12 percent Berkeley went up just a little but 17% all of those colleges is very
difficult to get admitted in those colleges so what this means is at
Stanford for every hundred students who applied ninety six of them were rejected
no you can’t come here it’s it is a challenge and it is difficult to get
into these top brand name colleges first the college versus the college has more
students apply then there are freshmen seats so that’s one of one thing it’s the whole supply and demand thing the
question is for those ninety six students that got a no you can’t come to
the school why was it because they had bad grades because they had bad test scores no those students don’t apply to
this college students are rejected at top colleges because they did not
properly promote themselves to the college they did not give the college
enough information to make a compelling reason to admit them so don’t get freaked out because before you get all
freaked out there’s only 75 colleges that are in that 25% admission ratio or
less there’s 262 colleges that have a 25 to 50% 700 and have a 50 to 75% admission
ratio 810 and have a seventy-five to a hundred percent admission ratio so
there’s a good chance that they you’re going to apply to a handful of these different colleges and you will get
admitted okay so regardless if you’re
applying to having selective colleges or call just someone somewhat selective or
even less selective you want to give the college a bunch of information about you and give them a compelling reason to
admit you grades and test scores are important however this is only one piece
of the puzzle colleges are selective
because they have more students apply than the number of freshman seats again I mentioned that just a moment ago and
that supply and demand the reason why they have why they have that is because they’ve done a really
good job at marketing okay when it college does a really good job at
marketing than their selectivity and then it becomes more more of a challenge
to get in those colleges because it College rejects more students than they admit that makes them selective because
a called rejects a bunch of students does that make it a better school a better college the answer is no it it is
ridiculous that a college is ranked higher for the simple fact that they reject more students than another college so we’re going to create a
scenario here we’re going to pool our money and we’re gonna create a college and we’re going to call it JD University
because I like the sound of that okay and what we’re going to do is we’re gonna do a marketing campaign we’re
gonna send out emails to every high school senior across the United States
and the email will also send letters to both the email and the letter are gonna
state this dear your name and we’ll make it customized so that their name fits
there dear your name you are the exact type of high achieving high ambitious
student that we want to admit to our colleges have you guys gotten those emails yet okay you can almost imagine
how much plagiarizing they have between those between those emails and letters so we’ll send that out to all the
colleges I’m sorry I’m sorry to all the high school seniors and then we’ll stay
down there not only do we think that your amazing student we’re going to waive the application fee so it’ll be
free for you to apply to our college and you’ll get some of those emails and once
we send all that out what we are going to do is we are going to reject 100%
then we will become the most selective college I mean how ridiculous is that
okay so I understand that colleges play these games a couple years ago so there’s three
colleges that all vie for the number one spot in his Harvard Princeton and
Stanford and they all you know this year we’re number one no next year we’re number one to all the stuff so a couple
of years ago Harvard got knocked out of the number one spot by Stanford first
time ever and Stanford’s like oh we got to get this back so what they did was
something really kind of dastardly they mailed out thousands of letters and
thousands of emails to high school seniors that haven’t had a 3.0 GPA or
higher and these these students across the United States are getting this letter from Harvard Harvard wants me yes
Harvard wants you to apply so they can reject those students and and with more
students apply like that and they can reject more students then they become more selective that’s it so you’ve got
to understand that colleges are playing these different games okay now why would
a college want to be highly selective and they’re and the simple reason is
because when they become more selective or highly selective that attracts more
attention and with more attention comes more applications and with more
applications comes more application fees so last year University of California
Berkeley had a hundred and one thousand students apply for four thousand seats
hundred one thousand students applied and it cost seventy dollars to apply so
$70 times 100 1000 is 7.2 million
dollars that was generated just in application fees so the real reason why
these colleges are doing these things is because of money now that you know that
now you can position yourselves to win
so yes apply to some highly selective colleges but don’t apply to just those
schools have a good mix of colleges so if you have the grades in the test scores then yes apply to highly
selective colleges and then apply to some other colleges as well let’s talk
about the wide so it’s called different
things it’s called your it’s called your resume it’s called a brag sheet it’s called your activities activity sheet
it’s called it they’re a bunch of different things basically in essence it is your high school resume what we want
is we want to give the college enough information about us so the college
admissions department knows and understands who we are and we want to paint an accurate picture of who we are
your grades and your test scores are important however extracurriculars and
your make you stand out let’s continue
with why most students are minimalist if that’s if that’s a word they give the
college as little information as possible here’s me make a decision okay so most students are minimalist
giving the college the minimum amount of information and expecting that that is enough these colleges have mailed out
tons of information to you and brochures flyers emails postcards all of those
things so they’re sending you a ton of information about about their college our college is awesome you need to come
here you need to apply here we want to reverse that and do the same thing we
want to send the college a ton of information about us about me about you and it’s going to be I’m awesome because
of these different things and you need to admit me because basically because
I’m awesome and you are so whenever I’m going to make a major purchase and college is a
major purchase I do a ton of research I’ll look at this I’ll look at that I’ll
investigate all these different things so that I know that I am informed okay
and I know exactly what I want and what the product is going to offer okay so
you should do the same on two fronts one is investigate the college’s review the
websites the brochures visit the college I know it’s a little bit difficult to visit the college’s right now since
we’re all in quarantine but you can go on on a search engine and type in the
name of the college so for example Arizona State University and virtual tour and then you can click on the link
and watch the virtual tour you can do that for each of the colleges that you’re looking at applying to and please do that and then what’s the quarantine
is lifted then go ahead and physically visit the college so wine is investing
at the college and get some information and two colleges want to know who you are so you want to give them a ton of
information about you the researcher
college does on you is what you send them your resume and other important
facts about you so again going back to my statement that whenever I’m going to do a major purchase like I’m going to
buy a car I’ll do a ton of research on that I’ll look up websites I’ll look up the consumer reports and all that stuff
colleges will do the same type of research on you with the information that you’re sending
them and you’re going to send them information and that will be your resume as well as the college application so
the purpose of the resume is first it will help you as a reference to fill out
the extracurricular section on the application on the YouTube page if you
scroll down a little bit there’s a link to the common app and Carmen app PDF you
can look at that these are the types of questions and please do familiarize yourself with that these are the types
of questions that colleges are gonna ask
about you what’s your name address phone number was high school you go to and hey what types of activity
these clubs and things are you involved with so if you have your resume already filled out you’ll use that as reference
as you’re filling out the college application when students start the
college application many don’t know where to start and because of this unknown they tend to
procrastinate if you have your resume hey and you’ve looked at the common app
PDF that I have on there you know what’s good you know what to expect and it will be a lot easier as you fill out the
college application the second purpose
is the resume is a reference for your teacher in your counselor so that they
can use it to write your recommendation letters okay
so you will approach your teacher and you’ll you’ll say something like this I’m going to be applying to some
colleges in the fall can you write me a great recommendation letter and that’s exactly how I would phrase it great
recommendation letter and if they say yes then you will give them a copy of
your resume and then they will be able to look at it go oh I didn’t know that you were in the Boy Scouts oh I didn’t
know that that you played rugby oh I didn’t know that you had a black belt in Taekwondo
having that resume will be reference for your teacher and your counselor as you
and as they write your recommendation letter the third purpose is you will
mail it or email it to college as a follow-up okay so after you submit your
college after you fill out your college application and you click the submit button and it goes off to ASU or
University of San Diego or TCU or whichever colleges that you’re applying to immediately after that you send an
email to your recruiter contact and your email is gonna state something like this
I’m super excited I just applied to your College attached as
my resume that gives them more information about you and the reason why
you want to send them an email is two things one is it gives that recruiter
more information about you because and here’s number two the online applications are limited to a certain
number of characters or a certain number of words and if you give a good and
proper full description of your activity it won’t all fit on the online applications so that’s the reason why
you want to follow up by emailing them a copy of your resume the fourth reason to
have your resume is to bring it to a college interview and I’m super excited
I had two students call me up and one of them said hey JD thank you very much for
helping me out with the interview and if the college does the interview let me know please and we’ll talk about some
interview techniques and he’s called me up and said JD I really want to thank you for helping me out with this
interview and all your techniques because I ended up winning that extra scholarship I’m like awesome okay so
bring a copy or bring several copies to your interview if the college interviews
sometimes when I go into a stressful situation my mind just goes blank and
they ask me a question what is your name and if I have it right
in front of me I could look out and go oh my name is JD weasel okay so if you have all your activities
and all that stuff and they go hey tell me a little about yourself you can look at you can quickly glance at your resume
and go oh yeah I played soccer and I was and in deca and I was in robotics I was
doing all these different things so you can take a look at it so bring several copies to your interview one copy you’ll keep and
the other or have a couple extras depending on if it’s going to be a single in a single person interview or
multiple person interview so you can give them to the panel so you’ll keep one copy and you’ll give one to the
interviewer or the panel so those are
the four reasons to have a high school resume let’s talk about a good resume
and a bad resume a good resume will
describe and paint an accurate picture of who you are you’re more than a
student who goes to school does homework hand it in on time please hand in your home at runtime you’re more than being
involved in a club or two you’re more than an athlete a mathlete or a bad leat so what you want to do is you want to
think about all the different things that you do and put them all down on
paper or type them all out on your computer so if you ask me JD should I
have this in my resume the answer is going to be yes initially yes at a later
point we’ll talk about it oh yeah let’s let’s keep that in there or let’s remove that or no let’s totally showcase this
okay so think about all the things that you do and put them all down and then
and then we’ll decide what we want to showcase on your resume sometimes students think that an activity that
they do is not important or may not be overly impressive when in reality it may
be the very one thing then we should include and we should showcase colleges want to see students that have a passion
for something and demonstrate that passion in the activities that are listed in their resume so I had a
conversation with a student and I asked him hey tell me a little bit about
yourself and he started spouting off all the different things that he thought would be would impress me and would also
impress a college I have these grades I have these test scores and I volunteered
here I about freshmen I’m an upper-class mentor all that stuff and after probing for a
bit I found out that he liked paintball as soon as I asked him hey tell me
little bit more about paintball he was kind of reluctant in the beginning to mention it and I said hey tell me love
about it as soon as as soon as he asked him that question he got really excited
and started telling me all the great things he was doing with paintball he was on two different travel teams he
traveled to California and Nevada and competed and he also goes online and
looks up the different paintball markers and the spring tensioners for the
trigger mechanisms and he goes out and purchases all the individual components
for his marker and builds up his markers and his paintball markers enough and I’m
like wow that’s actually kind of impressive so what we ended up doing was
we ended up showcasing that in his resume and we also talked about that in
his essay and we kind of tied it all together with the major that he wanted
to study which was engineering so we
talked about how he did the research and found out the different spring tensions
for the trigger mechanism and all that stuff and how he wants to study engineering and really understand all
that stuff so in a nutshell be yourself yes and and definitely promote yourself
and yes Ian is studying engineering in college there’s another story another
student didn’t think that his business was overly impressive and after asking
him some more questions I found out you know what this really is kind of impressive and he the reason why you
didn’t think it was impressive was because he didn’t make a whole lot of ton of money he didn’t make some
but it didn’t make you know a million dollars or a hundred thousand dollars or anything like that so he thought it was
not impressive because he didn’t make that kind of money and because he didn’t have a hundred employees and all that
stuff but again after talking to him and probing and asking some more questions
found out that he does a lot of research and research different business strategies and implemented these
strategies and developed a product and and sold his product online and and did
make some good money this this interest can be showcased to show his passion
about being an entrepreneur and wanting to potentially study business or international business in college and
yes Kelly is studying business in college so what are your secret hobbies
in your interest you can explore developing a passion and how to promote and market yourself class I did have
that class a couple weeks ago you can review that class again and
don’t eliminate something because you think it might not be impressive to a college it might be the one thing that
we want to showcase the biggest pitfall
a resume and resume writing and college applications is to merely state your
past responsibilities to state your activity and your job history you don’t
want the called recruiter to work at determining what you have to offer them and what you have accomplished you want
to sell your accomplishments and work experience make it easy for them to want
to recruit you the colleges won’t know if you’re eligible for a leadership scholarship if they don’t know all the
things that you have done most colleges are looking for reasons to admit you the
common out common app is a wonderful tool it’s a single website common app
dot o-r-g is the website where you can apply to multiple colleges in the SA
application class which is coming up in June so for all you juniors class of 2021 make sure you sign up for one of
those sessions I will send out an email and a text message to sign up for that
class so what’s awesome about the common al is currently there’s over 900
colleges that are utilizing this one website so when I tell students that I’m
encouraging them to apply to ten colleges the very first thing that they
do is kind of freak out oh no I have to do 10 different college applications and 10 different essays no no we’re gonna
fill out the common app we’re going to write one maybe two essays and we’ll
show you in the application essay class how to write one or two essays that will fit any prompt so you’ll write that
essay you’ll copy it copy and paste it onto the comm app and then you’ll click click click on which colleges you want
to apply to so currently asu’s on the common app you’ve a days on the Common App University of San Diego’s on the
common app Pepperdine is on the common app so you can click on those four colleges and it will go to fill out one
application and I go to all four of those colleges so the resume template
that I posted on the YouTube page that PDF on there is an example of the
questions that are asked on the college application in in particular on the
common app so there’s two areas that you can showcase your talent and your
ability the first one is in the honors section and honors is not honors classes
these are accolades academic accolades that you have accomplished of course
and test scores are showcased your job is to you get the best grades the best GPA you can and get the best test score
you can yes those are important but also on the college application asks what
type of honors are you involved with and I’ve had conversations with some other students and they’ve said well I’m not
involved in any honors or any I don’t have any accolades well are you a member
of NHS National Honor Society yes well then that will go on here and you would
put that on your college application I do want you to note that it does say on
here 9th 10th 11th and 12th grade so the
college application is going to ask you what did you do from 9th grade moving forward now if you were a boy scout or a
Girl Scout in fifth grade and you stopped being involved in that
organization in eighth grade then we would not include it on here but if
you’re a Boy Scout or a Girl Scout in fifth grade and you’re still involved in that organization while you’re now that
you’re in high school that’s what I call a carryover you carried it over from elementary or you carried it over from
middle school junior high into high school if that’s the carryover activity then yes we will include that so yes I
was I started playing piano in fourth grade and I am still playing piano today
that’s a carryover we would include those things okay other honors are you were selected for
honor student of the month or honor student of the year at your high school those things would be included on there
and and also verbal accolades you those also can count so when a teacher gives
you any type of verbal accolade hey you know what JD you were you did a great job in my biology class I really really
appreciate all the input that you contributed to the class that’s a verbal accolade we would put
that on and in this section and on the common app in the honor section there’s
five spots for five honors five accolades well JD I have seven then or
seven then what you would do is you would put your top five on the online
application and then in your resume you would have the remaining accolades and
then you would send an email to the recruiter after you apply and and then
in that and that would all be listed on your resume and that would stay down there all seven accolades that you have
and and your email would say something like this dear mr. recruiter or miss recruiter use
user your their name and stayed on there I’m super excited I just applied your
college I applied on the common app common app has five spots four five activities I have seven here’s my resume
with all of them okay also on the Common
App and other college applications is the extracurricular and work experience
section and it kind of looks like this and the extracurricular section includes
clubs that you’re involved with at your high school you want to list all of them the actives that you’re involved with
outside of school inside of school all the above so some things that you’re
involved with outside of school might be karate or Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts or something like that and I want to read
what it states on there it says to please list them in importance to you so
if the most important thing and activity that you’ve been involved with is dance and put that as number one
all right looks like sorry about that I
don’t know what happened looks like a dead glitch there for a second so
hopefully all of you can see the live stream again and we’re talking about the
common app activities there on the YouTube page is the common app activity
type and there’s a drop down take a look at that at that PDF and look at the
different activities that are on there for example our athletic career oriented
community service volunteer etc look at all these different activities and answer and ask yourself do I fit in any
of these activities do I have an activity hobby or interest or job that fits any of these categories okay so
take a look at that on the YouTube page and make a positive impression on the
reader so which one is more impressive
so first thing that you need to know is that colleges college and application
readers at most every college they really do want to admit you and you want
to give them a compelling reason to me so don’t bore them some admission application readers will read and review
50 applications 50 essays in a day so don’t be the student that puts them to
sleep so we don’t when you are when you send in your application we don’t know
that if you’re going to be number one in that day or number 50 in that day so we
want to make a positive impression we want to give them some good solid information here’s an example I was
talking with one of my students and he showed me his resume and it said clerk CL Yeerk
five letters on there yeah and here’s my question does the reader know exactly
what the student did or does the reader have to guess what this student did of
course the the readers gonna have to guess as a clerk I don’t know what this person does I can imagine what what this
person does but I would have to guess we want to spell it out for them literally
so after I was talking with Connor I said could you rewrite it give me some more information tell me a little bit
more about it and this is what he ended up writing I am an employee I am employed at Walgreens my duties include greeting
customers balancing the cash register reviewing inventory stocking the shelves
with products I’m also responsible for closing out the store and locking up two
nights a week I’m like wow that last statement is really impressive the other
the other description doesn’t give any detail on anything and admissions
application reader would have to guess what the student did with this particular description the details are
stalled out what exactly were his responsibilities for this activity so I
do want to point out that it he did stayed on there that he was responsible to lock up the store twice a week and
another word for a responsible is leadership as a result of that and
putting all this detail in there Connor and enough earning a leadership scholarship how’d he not put that in
there he would have not received that scholarship here’s another example Fogg
and Irish dances but I great to cooperate five hours a week when I read
that I would have to guess what this student did so I asked her to expand on
it and this is what Elly wrote I am a dance instructor with the Maricopa forage cloggers I have taught dance to
other students who range from beginning to advanced I have choreographed parade
routines to and solos I was nominated clogger of the month I received first place in the
national competition first and show second and do that category second place overall at a regional competition I was
elected president of America before age cloggers two years in a row and one year as vice president is that a lot more
impressive than the first one dance hog Irish dance absolutely it is
so what this student actually did even
though she was involved heavily in the Maricopa forage cloggers we broke it
into several different categories and and separated out so one category was
dance instructor I taught the little kids how to do the different routines another category was president and vice
president and she listed out her detailed duties of what she was doing as
president and another one was dancer you know what she did and the competitions and all that stuff so that was actually
three different categories that we in three different activity sections within
the common app if you are part of a
group that achieved an accomplishment you want you don’t want to stay I you
don’t want to stay we you want to stay I did this because it’s not we who’s being
admitted to college it’s I who’s being admitted to college so I was in involved
in dance I was a choreographer even though she and a couple other girls together worked on the choreography it’s
she’s selling herself on that here’s another example Kay filled this one out
and it was athletics varsity was the title and the description was soccer and
she did that 9th 10th 11th and 12th grade 15 hours a week and I asked her to give me some more detail on that she
played soccer midfield our city Lenard three years she was also in club
soccer they went to the state finals she was in a championship high school team undefeated she was also a soccer
referee she was certified for that and she volunteered and taught younger kids how to play soccer so that’s really
awesome she gave all that detailed information and what we ended up doing
was we ended up taking that and we split it into four different categories so
this students activities revolved around soccer and here’s the question should
they all be listed under the athletics menu no absolutely not all these things revolved around
athletics but we can put them into different categories so let’s take a look at that so in one category it was
high school activity and the high school activity was she played on a high school
on her high school team and she and her team went undefeated another category
was work experience that’s one of the categories it’s on the common app under
the drop-down their work experience and she put on your certified referee sideline refs entered her she was also a
little sent early draft for various different age groups and called plays fouls and kept parents in check she got
paid to do that so that is work experience she also also over here we
got volunteer so she volunteered and she taught the little kids how to play
soccer and then over here we’ve got extracurricular activity she was in on a
her club team so she was involved all with athletics we broke it into four
different categories and had four different activities on her resume and
in her college application please do not
read what they already know I see this one too many times oh I’m involved with National Honor
Society sometimes they’ll put on their NHS please don’t use initials please
spell it all the way out National Honor Society and then they’ll put on their National Honor Society is a nationwide
activity academic organization for high school students I qualified because of my
strong grades well that’s how that student got in I I don’t know what this
student did within this club so when we’re talking about the details of what you did with in that activity within
that club within that hobby within that job you want to provide them with some
detailed information so what did you do
in this organization in this club and activity and please stop copy and paste
from online category catalogs or from Wikipedia college application essay
readers know something is copied or plagiarized they have read thousands of college applications if you go online
you can find you can you can google on their resume that got me into Harvard or
as si that got me into Harvard you can find hundreds of those things online and
guarantee there will be some enterprising student that literally copies all that stuff I can guarantee
that the application reader knows that that’s been plagiarized and has read
that previously so please be original on that and yes please use your thesaurus
so do you use your thesaurus to describe different activities but don’t over a
thesaurus eyes if that’s a word the application resume brag sheet all that
should be in your words it just sounded like the vernacular the words that you
use not words that were used in the 19th century so write out your resume use
with thesaurus then ask your parents and your friends to read it and I’ll secure it if it sounds like it’s something that
you would use in your work in your words so if you normally use four syllable and five syllable words then yes include
that but if you don’t do that then please don’t also you
some attention-grabbing words on the YouTube page is the action verbs 1 and
action verbs to PDF you could check those out at a later point so here are
some attention-grabbing words accelerated accomplished achieved etc so
let’s talk about some attention-grabbing words which word is better ask or
inquire ask or inquire well of course the what we want to know is is which
word invokes more emotion which one invokes more power more drama more
strength more depth and of course inquire does that which word is better
big or immense which word invokes more
emotion which word invokes more power more drama more strength more depth and
of course immense pizza as a better grabbing word so write out your resume
and then take a look at each one of those individual words and go can I replace one of these words with
something that is a little bit more attention grabbing a little bit more powerful here’s another example which
word is better new or fresh which one invokes more emotion more power drama
strength and depth and of course yes fresh has more of those so use words
that you would normally use and don’t use words that you would not normally use and don’t over thesaurus eyes and do
it now please start now by creating your activity of bag sheet your resume and it
will be so much easier for you when it’s time to fill out the college application and ask your teachers and your
counselors to write your recommendation letters for you so for those of you that are juniors class of 2021
I’m going to send out a text message probably in about three or four weeks
and it will be and it will stay down there remember to go and talk to your teacher
and ask them to write you a great recommendation letter the reason to get
it done early is first off it’s gonna be less stress if you get it done
second is some scholarships are limited and are given to the first few students who qualify so you could be at a lower
end qualifying and beat out some students here’s an example is if a college has five scholarships for
example and to qualify for that you have to have a 3.0 GPA and you have to have a
1200 or a 28 1200 SAT or a 28 a CT score
and if you apply and you’re one of the five first five that fit into that
category you’ll get you’ll get that scholarship if person number six comes
in it has a perfect 4.0 and has a perfect SAT score that student will not
get that scholarship so you can beat out students that have better grades and better test scores by getting your
application in early so what I want you
to do right now is I want you to think about which teacher you’re gonna ask to
write your recommendation letter so think in the back of your mind which teacher loves me the most and that’s
where you’ll ask you can also use the activities template that’s on the
YouTube page you can download that please don’t send that specifically to
the colleges because it’s not exactly pretty we want it to look pretty and
when we’re sending it to a college and in the essay and application class we
will talk about how to make your resume fit a certain standard and make it look
pretty so if you start now with building your template reviewing it rewording it
reworking it and doing all that stuff when it comes time to fill out the college application all you’ll need to
do is simply copy and paste into the application now do you remember that the online
application does have a limited number of characters or a limited number of words so we need to adhere to those
things and always before you click or before you send it in a sealed envelope
you want to double check everything
here’s an example of a detailed description Speech and Debate speech and
debate club at 10th and 11th 10 to 11 hours and this person was involved in in
11th and 12th grade and this is why I wrote in order to encourage students to improve their communication skills I
founded the school’s first Speech and Debate club as part of the Southwest forensic league we participated in local
and regional tournaments and competed in competitive debates to get students
interested in I videotaped the tournaments and showed them to new members as president I coordinate
practices to ensure that members are prepared for tournaments I also invite guest speakers and coaches from other
schools to guide students through this academic experience the greatest satisfaction has come from witnessing
originally shy students emerge a doubtful public speakers is that an
impressive statement instead of just Speech and Debate yeah absolutely it is
now I do want you to note that this all will not fit on the online application
so it would take the two most impressive sentences and put that on the online
application and then we would have this in your resume and send in that whole
complete description to your recruiter contact when you are filling out your
resume please do not use vague words so
vague words are many numerous a lot okay so here’s a weak statement I volunteered
many hours at various community charities what does that mean I have no idea what it means
how many hours and various community charities what type of charities was it
the food bank or was it Special Olympics I have no idea so that’s kind of a weak
or vague statement a strong statement is this one I volunteered seven hours per
week at st. Peter’s soup kitchen I greeted patrons as they came in and helped serve meals Wow BAM that’s very
descriptive now as a reader and I read that statement I know exactly what the
student did so this is specific and gives enough detail so that someone can
actually picture it in their mind they can actually see the student reading
patrons and serving meals and doing all this all these things so create that
word picture stop spilling spots spell
out spilling spelling matters also punctuation and grammar so spelling
matters it this is one of your first impressions or it could be the last impression so you want a double triple
check spelling punctuation and grammar before you lick the stamp and mail it or
before you click the send and submit button so double check spelling and
punctuation grammar after you have
committed everything to you paper or you typed it out read it out loud the reason
why I want you to read it out loud is because that is how you learn language when you are a baby did your parents
hand you a English dictionary and say here’s here’s English go ahead and learn
it or did they talk to you yes that that they talk to you and when you hear it
you’re able to understand it sometimes when you read it on paper or you read it
on a screen and if there’s an error in there sometimes your brain will correct it if
you read it out loud sometimes you’ll hear something that sounds funny and if
it sounds funny then go ahead and correct it so the easiest way to detect if there is a grammatical error is to
read it out loud to hear it you’ll be able to hear the errors and then cracked up and crushed as needed so please read
your resume out loud or have your friend or your parent read it to you so start
now on your resume don’t procrastinate if you spend fifteen or thirty minutes right now starting this until it’s
finished it’s gonna be so much easier how you can start is you can start with
just bullet points and I want you to think about what did I do in the fall of my freshman year and
write that down again write everything down what did I do in the spring of my
freshman year write all those things down so let’s think about what I do during those times and then what ask
yourself this question what did I do in the freshman sophomore summer write that
stuff down I want to do my sophomore year want to do my junior what am i doing now write all those things down
and as you do new things add to it so you can’t just start off with some
bullet points and then add the detail descriptions at a later point so if you
have that resume done when it’s time to fill out the application the only thing that you’re going to need is personal
information your name address your date of birth your social security number and a few other details and then and then
you’ll have your resume and then you’ll be able to just copy and paste or upload your resume under the application if you
do all these things it will literally take you 15 maybe 20 minutes to fill out
any college application if you prepare early so most students will spend hours
and hours agonizing over starting and hours that’s the
staring at the application not knowing where to start you know you know what
the application is going to ask there’s the common app PDF that’s on that YouTube page right there you can just
click on that and look at it it’s gonna ask you about your activities your work experience all those things so you can
start now so you won’t forget an important detail or cover activity that you’re involved with and right now
please put everything on there and we’ll have a conversation later on yes we
should showcase this or not so include everything on your resume all all
everything I once went to a speech and the speaker said all means all and
that’s all all means so that’s what I want you to do is put everything on there all so do you babysit you house
watch dog watch pet watch those things may not seem impressive but they
actually are a form of leadership and so if you’re a baby scene or house watching
or dog walking or those things those are responsibilities things and another word for leadership is responsibilities
include everything so did you volunteer at your church or your temple or
synagogue and what were your duties will be responsibilities within that did you volunteer at Saint Mary’s Food Bank what
did you do there put all those things down if you do activities on your own
for example I was talking with a student and he said that he goes mountain biking
twice a week I’m like awesome we’re gonna put that on there even though he’s
not involved in any club or sport with in mountain biking he just does it because he enjoys it and because he
enjoys it so put that on there if you go to the gym on a regular basis and I
would include those things what do you do on a regular basis so think I want you to think back what did I do in my
freshman year sophomore my junior year and also want you to think about what I what on Monday what to do on Tuesday why do
on Wednesday whether even Thursday Friday what I do on the weekends and make some bold points and then add some
details with that so start building your resume so when it’s time to fill out
your application you have a reference you can also copy and paste in your application in as in as and being one of
the first applicants to do that you’re going to be in the frontrunners so some colleges I mentioned this our earlier
some colleges have a limited number of scholarships and if you’re one of the first ones in line to qualify for it
then you’ll get it so let’s say you story about David David applied to Purdue and he worked on his resume got
all that stuff ready and he came to the application class worked on his essay and we fill out the application in the
class and then applications go live in August he had all that stuff ready to go
before August then on August 1st he logged in there double-checked
everything yeah it looks good he copied and pasted his essay in there and he
uploaded his resume in there click the submit button and then immediately after
that he sent an email to his recruiter contact at Purdue and it said hey I’m
super excited I just submitted my application to your college I can’t wait
to be a student here and oh by the way I’ve also included my resume it’s
attached on here it has a lot more detail he did all that and not only did
he get admitted to Purdue he got a really good scholarship package at his
high school there were several other students that also applied to Purdue that had higher grades and higher test
scores then David did but got a lesser scholarship package and what was the
reason for that one of the reasons was because they applied late so if the if
the college says you don’t have to get your application in until February 1st or March 1st or whatever we don’t want
to wait till that very end to get our application in we want to get it in as soon as that door opens imagine this
imagine that you are working at the University of california-berkeley in
their admissions department and you’re one of the readers that reads the essays
and reads the applications and you know that the majority of the applications
75% of all the applications that come in end up showing up 48 hours before the
deadline and now it’s 48 hours before the deadline how happy are you not at
all you’re going to be completely stressed out so we want to get our application as soon as that window opens
before those application essay readers go into frantic panic mode we wanted to
go in and they’re nice and calm so a
recap start writing or typing out all of your activities include all activities
clubs accolades honors and hobbies write
detailed impressive descriptions of what you did within that activity ask your junior teacher if they can
write a great recommendation letter for you print out your activities your resume and give it as reference to your teacher
and your counselors so if you start that now when it’s time for us to do the
college applications it will be a lot smoother a lot faster a lot less stress
so do we have any questions if you have any questions send me a text message I’ll look at it for just a couple
minutes here and see if we’ve got any
questions that come in [Music]
alright are there any questions if there are no questions then have a great rest
of your day and be safe out there look for the email
and text to sign up for the marketing class look for the email and text to
sign up for the virtual college fair thank you very much how great evening
