Directing and advising

So, uh, take a look at this list and if anything kind of pops in your head, write it down and send me an email and say, “Hey, JD, what do you think about this?” And I’ll be happy to uh give you some feedback on all that.

Do you have any questions or or before I ask questions, do you have any ideas that kind of popped in your head?

It’s just when I think of my passion, it’s just I don’t think I don’t have anything I can offer as a as of right now because I like building stuff.

And I like I don’t know one day I just hope I can help people with I guess things that they want to give to other people.

Okay.

I go ahead.

I want to I want to help people feel comfortable. And I guess why I like architecture so much is because I like how different styles of of buildings can bring different senses to other people.

I’ve always wanted to help people find what what they want and what’s good for them.

Okay. I’m going to tell you two stories.

Um, and then I also want you to look up the torso building and it’s in Sweden. So if you if you just Google the torso building in Sweden,

um, it’s a very interesting building that that is kind of it kind of twists as it goes up and it almost looks like a torso twisting. So they they nicknamed the building the torso twist building.

Um so if you want to look at some unusual pieces of architecture, that’s one of them. Here’s here’s two stories.

Um the first story is one of my students was a babysitter and I might you might know this story already, the babysitter essay story. um

she was a babysitter and found that it was very difficult to install car seats in cars and she did some research and found that uh improperly installed car seats was the number one killer of toddlers and infants. So she wanted to go to engineering school to learn how to build a better, safer, easier to install baby car seat. So that was her idea of wanting to give back to the community and stuff.

Um, so maybe maybe something like that pops in your head like how can I how can I do this to make it better that people will will want this thing whatever this thing is whether it be a building or whether it be a car seat or who knows what. Um, so think about that and when you get an idea write it down. It’s really important to write it down because I’ve had some really great ideas. I’m like, “Wow, that’s a really great idea.” And then I go to sleep and then wake up the next morning and I’m like, “I had a really great idea, but I can’t remember what it is.” So, you got to write it down so you remember it.

Um, here’s here’s my other story. My second story is there are opportunities all around us, all around us all the time.

It’s just a matter of keeping your eyes and your ears open for these opportunities. my cousin um my actually my cousin’s husband he used to work for a hospital and his job was to clean the surgical equipment in the surgery rooms and they were the big you know heart lung machines and the you know uh uh whatever other machines big machines that they had in surgery the kidney dialysis machine and stuff like that he would clean those things and get them ready for the next surgery.

Well, as he was going through his day cleaning these things, he would hear the doctors and the nurses complain, “Oh, I really wish this device would do this or that.” And he was a little bit handy and he went home and in his garage he built this thing. And this thing it it it it connects to the the surgical machine and I don’t remember all the details. you’ll just get the basics of it. Uh it connects to this machine to make it better for what the nurses and the doctors wanted it to accomplish.

And he ended up um creating a patent for that. And that little device is now in every hospital across the entire planet.

He made millions of dollars on that. And that was simply by keeping your eyes and your ears open for opportunities. So there are opportunities all around us.

Um so keep your eyes and ears open for that. Write down your idea and then you can send me an email or a text message and go, “Hey JD, what do you think about this?” And I’ll be happy to give you some feedback on that.

Okay.

Um,

so you you said you’re not really sure how you can contribute. Well, one way that you can contribute is learn more about it.

So, um, go online and go to YouTube and check out some engineering um, videos or check out some architectural videos and maybe pick up some books on on that subject. Um, definitely learn CAD. Uh, and any other Say again, I’m certified in CAD.

Sweet.

Do more with that.

Do you have a 3D printer?

I don’t. I wish I could make some stuff.

Well, does your does your school have a 3D printer that you could use? We have multiple in the engineering classroom is what we worked on a lot last year, but I don’t know if we have any spare ones.

Well, go talk to your teacher and say, “Hey, I’m working on this project. Is it okay if I use the 3D printer?”

And then make something. I I’m I’m sure if they have time that they would more likely say yes.

That would be cool. And then when you make that thing, take a picture of it and send it to me because I’d love to see it.

Okay.

Okay.

Uh any questions?

Not at the moment.

Okay. So, just to kind of quickly recap,

uh sign up for those tests now. Um and

do some prep and study. I’ll send you a

video on the best practice on how to uh

prep and study. I’ll send that when

we’re done here and then you can review

that. It’s like a nine-minute video

that’ll tell you the best ways to

practice and and prep. One of them is

using Khan Academy.

Um, and then this year is kind of

important to get involved in clubs. So,

your junior year is important to get

involved in clubs.

And when you’re involved in the club,

look for a leadership position. Any

leadership position.

I know you said you were a treasurer

last year. That’s awesome. Do something

maybe the same thing or or something

different, but a leadership position.

When Tori

decided to join an academic club, she

also decided that she wanted to try and

get a leadership position within that

academic club. Well, there were two or

two or three people running for

president and there were two or three

people running for uh vice president and

no one was running for secretary.

So, she put her name in there and she

got elected as secretary. On the arizona college admission advice

application, it asks

uh what club are you in? I’m in the

academic club. And then the next

question is

do you hold a leadership position?

What’s your title? And so she put in

there, secretary of the academic club.

The next question is not in there. Did

you beat out 30 other kids to get the

spot? That question is not in there.

Okay? So when I say any leadership

position, I really mean any leadership

position. Take a look and if no one’s

running for treasure, put your name in

there. If no one’s running for vice

president, put your name in there and

try and get that.

Our advisory teacher kind of runs it in

a specific way that if you were officer

last year, then you call someone to be

officer for the next year and then that

person has to call on. And I was I was

an officer my sophomore year

and I’m pretty sure

next year I probably get voted to do

something. All right. Awesome.

Okay. Any other questions?

No, don’t be.

All right. I would like to talk to you

again after you get your next um SAT or

ACT scores.

Okay.

All right. If between now and then you

have any questions, of course, give me a call
