Waiting until the deadline could cost you an advantage.
For Fall 2027, Barrett’s Early Action deadline is November 1, 2026 — and Barrett specifically states that students in the Early Action pool have the “best chance for a positive decision.” Early Action applicants are also eligible for Barrett scholarship consideration and have the opportunity to appeal a disappointing decision. ⚠️ But November 1 should NOT be your target date.
Barrett recommends applying to ASU 4–6 weeks BEFORE your preferred Barrett deadline, because you need your ASURITE ID to access the separate Barrett application, and your Barrett application cannot be considered complete until ASU admission is conferred. (Barrett Honors College)
📝 THE 2027 BARRETT ESSAY
Students choose ONE of the three prompts and write 300–500 words:
1️⃣ The Question
What is a question you continually find yourself returning to? Explain how pursuing the answer—or continuing to wrestle with the question—demonstrates why you’re a strong fit for Barrett.
2️⃣ When the Plan Failed
Describe a time something didn’t go according to plan. The important part isn’t simply what happened—it’s how you responded and what that response reveals about your fit for Barrett.
3️⃣ The Object
Choose an object that connects you to your family or community. Explain that connection and how it helps demonstrate why you’re a strong fit for Barrett. (Barrett Honors College)
The essay should answer the underlining question which is Why Do You Want to Attend ASU Barrett, why you’re a strong fit for Barrett.
And this is important:
This is NOT just another college essay.
Barrett says the essay helps the admissions committee understand how you reason, what you value, how effectively you communicate, and how you think critically. They specifically warn that general or impersonal essays are less successful. (Barrett Honors College)

Your curiosity.
Your thinking.
Your values.
Your experiences.
And what you could contribute to the Barrett community.
⏰ THE EARLIER-BIRD ADVANTAGE
If Barrett is on your college plan, don’t think: “The deadline isn’t until November.”
Think: “How early can I submit a strong application?”
Apply to ASU early. Get your ASURITE ID. Start the Barrett application. Give yourself time to develop a thoughtful essay and secure your recommendation letters.
Early doesn’t mean rushed. It means getting the application started early enough that you have time to make your essay GREAT.
