1. Never make your final college selection without visiting at least your top two or three choices. No matter how well you think you know a college or university, you can learn a lot (good or bad) by spending a few hours on campus, including whether or not the college feels like a good “fit” for you. Having family members accompany you on college visits is a great idea because it gives you extra “eyes and ears” and people with whom you can discuss your impressions.

1) Apply to 6 to 8 colleges, minimum.
One of the things that we have found is that it does no good to apply to so few colleges that you don’t get admitted anywhere or admitted to only 1 or 2.
You don’t need to apply to 30 different colleges, and in fact, it can actually hurt you in the long run. But, the ideal amount is to apply to 6 to 8 colleges.

Cave Creek Arizona – J.D. the college guy was driving from Phoenix to San Diego for a college planning industry conference. It was a nice drive down Highway 8. A stack of music CDs and a fistful of highly caffeinated drinks.
Well I was surprised there were three, yes three US Border Patrol checkpoints. At the second checkpoint an eager officer was stopping all the traffic for inspection and questions.
